How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth

Dental health care for dogs is good for your pet in both short and long term care. They will experience the benefits of regular teeth care especially when they get older and have a healthier mouth than their peers because their human took charge of their dental care early in the game.

Here are some pointers on how to brush your dog’s teeth.

  1. Will you dog allow you to clean their teeth? Not all dogs do. If they try to bite you or growl, don’t stick your finger in their mouth. But if they appreciate having their teeth cleaned and let you do so, that is great. Their teeth get healthier, and you enjoy a new bonding experience with your pet.
  2. Buy a toothbrush kit for your dog if you can. They come in different flavors like poultry and beef which will make brushing their teeth easier for you and more enjoyable for them. These kits also contain tooth brushes or finger brushes that work quite well.
  3. Put a little toothpaste on the finger brush. Then gently open the mouth and rub the teeth at the canines, then onto the incisors, and move your way back to the upper and lower molars. Make sure you get all the teeth.
  4. Be very gentle. You don’t want too see blood—that means you are doing it too hard. Another sign is if they are whining or complaining. That means you are pushing too hard. Just gentle pressure will do. Most dogs should respond to that, and you will have a pet with great teeth and gums.
